Cooling Pads

Cellulose Cooling Pads

Cellulose Pad (also known as: wet walls, wet curtains and wet media) is one of the intermediaries of evaporative cooling consisting of various layers of thin and rippling sheets with characteristics of water high absorption which is saturated and strengthened with resin chemical compounds in order to prevent its decay and decomposition.

Since cellulose pad has a geometrical texture and regular texture resulting from allocation of different angles and wavelengths of paper on each other, it made them to have distribution of water evenly and provided more area to have contact with passing airflow. Airflow moving through rigid and wet layers of the pad and no transfer of water drops into cooling space could cause maximum chilling of water and makes it cold intensely.

Evaporation efficiency of cellulose pad is different based on the variables such as temperature of the air, speed of airflow, thickness of pad, rigidity and temperature of water, and it is higher than the old type of evaporation medium (chaff). Generally, cellulose pad is an appropriate replacement for chaff whose privileges are mentioned below.

Cooling Pads Privileges of Cellulose Pad than Chaff

  • Specification of wettability and high absorption of water due to better raw materials
  • Easy installation, washing and maintenance because of high static specification
  • Low electricity consumption due to low pressure decrease in humid condition
  • Stability and no decrease in height due to regular and stronger
  • Lower sedimentation speed for permanent movement of water
  • Capability of submitting in different dimensions and widths
  • Decreasing entrance of dust because of various layers
  • Less capacity for growing fungus and pollution on pad
  • More shelf life (3 to 5 times more than chaff)
  • a30% cooler during a season

Providing Cool Air in Greenhouses

  • Evaporative cooling is the best cooling condition for greenhouses. In most regions, this type of cooling could maintain temperature below 80 F (26.6 C). Furthermore, most dust and dirt, insects and suspending particles in the air could be cleaned by pads. Also, the humidity resulting from evaporative cooling may decrease the water required for irrigation, and the produced humidity prevents transpiration of plants and egression of water consisting of minerals and their withering. The relative humidity more than 90 percent is fully safe and it seems that relative humidity between 50 to 75 percent looks best. This amount of humidity will be obtained when relative humidity of air from cooler is 80 to 90 percent. The eligible distance between fans and pads are between 100 to 225 ft. (30.5 to 68.8 m). In greenhouses, pads shall be installed on the both sides of greenhouses and fans are placed in the middle section. In some cases, fans may be installed on ceiling. To have appropriate air distribution among plants, it is advised to install fans.
